You may be wondering, why is my loved one being asked to wake up, move around, or even walk while still connected to the ECMO circuit? The concept of awake ECMO is to increase the function for acitivies of daily living that the patient is not able to receive while sedated. For example, some activities that are done when the patient awakes, are sitting up, eating, drinking, and most importantly moving muscles that atrophy (stiffen) overtime. Here is some more information below!
In short, the reasoning for waking one up while still cannulated to ECMO, is to reduce trauma from other invasive procedures that may be occuring at the time (intubation), as well as getting the patient moving which studies have shown may increase patient outcome in certain cases with special circumstances.
