Being there for a loved one on ECMO can feel overwhelming, but your presence, even in small ways, can be incredibly meaningful. Although they may be sedated or unable to respond, speaking gently to them, holding their hand (if allowed), and playing familiar music or sharing memories can offer comfort. Staying informed and involved in their care decisions shows your support and advocacy. It’s also important to take care of your own emotional and physical health so you can continue to be a steady presence. Simply letting them know they’re not alone is a powerful way to support.
In short, although it may seem selfish to ask, it is completely understandable that watching someone you love and care for go through a traumatic medical event may have an effect on you. Families who watch a loved one experience PICS, experience F-PICS. Be sure to advocate for your loved one, take time for yourself, and seek support if and when needed. There is an attached template of some questions you can ask the medical team during your loved one's stay- both for documentation and peace of mind!
